TANAKA DRESS 2022

Canvas, pink tulle, red thread, red telephone wire, six metal snaps

A response to Tanaka Atsuko’s Electric Dress (1956), this garment thematically plays with the extension of the body in space by engaging Tanaka’s formal use of circles and lines. The shape of the sleeve is predicated on the relationship between these forms. The inner seam of the arm constitutes part of a circle, which extrudes outwards in an expanding spiral to build the top of a sleeve. This creates a finished sleeve that has a straight inner arm seam and a loosely waffled exterior seam. It is a dress that points to growth through movement. Lines extend beyond the form, inscribing a broad circumference around the body.

The form extends out in waves; the line of the body creates a curve in the universe.
